Engine noise
« on: December 03, 2008, 09:13:02 AM »
I have about 1500 km on my Tiguan and have noticed now that the engine is very loud.  There is a prominent clicking, so much so that I would think it is a diesel engine with about 300,000km on it.  My 11 year old beetle isn't even this noisy.  I would expect higher quality from VW so I'm questioning whether my engine is a lemon.  It does seem to perform ok though.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I am trying to get in touch with the dealer to have them look at it.

If it sounds like a diesel than it might be pinging, which is very bad for the engine. You might want to drop by your dealer for a check.

Not to alarm anyone. My new Tiguan is in the shop. Initially heard a soft knocking/clicking sound from engine area, which seemed to have disappeared, but then suddenly returned  and was much louder, as though something was knocking against a loose plate. Fortunately was able to take it to a dealer quickly and found out that it was the drive shaft that actually came apart from the engine block, major problem! Still waiting for an explanation and parts for the repair.  :(  So, if noise persists, I suggest take it in and have them check it.

stiger - Sorry to hear about your problems.

I stopped by the dealership today and had the Tiguan specialist take a look at the engine.  He said that the 2.0 Turbo engines are quite loud and that mine sounds perfect.  Apparently it is the cam shaft on this particular engine that makes that ticking noise.

what kind of 2.0T engine do you have? FSI or TSI? If you have a FSI engine in your Tiguan, then it is normal to have that ticking sound, if you can find a 2006-2007 A3 2.0T FSI, you will hear the same noise~

Excuse my ignorance, I'm not sure which engine it is.  I want to say TSI.  What does TSI and FSI stand for?

correct me if i am wrong...

first of all, the ticking/tapping noise that you hear from your engine is absolutely normal, it's the high pressure fuel injector valve opening and closing, the injectors functions very similar to diesel fuel injectors.

TSI stands for Turbocharged Stratified Injection and FSI stands for Fuel Stratified Injection...

It explains the type of injection, both TSI and FSI engine has direct injection, fuel injectors are sitting right on top of combustion chamber. Fuel is injected directly into combustion chamber, and mixed with air on intake stroke. Unlike multi point fuel injections, fuel is injected and pre-mixed with air in intake port. This way, it improves power and reduces emission.

In NA, TSI is basically just a name for 2nd gen 2.0T engine, to separate from 1st gen FSI engine, TSI engine uses timing chain and FSI engine uses timing belt, and engine designs are different. You will have to do some search on google, i am not too sure myself. But I know a real TSI engine such as 1.4L TSI engine in Europe is a twincharged system, which means it has both turbocharger and supercharger. Supercharger feeding turbocharger when in low RPM range to cover turbol lag, so engine is more responsive and more HP. A little 1.4L TSI engine produces 168HP. But too bad, we don't have that engine in NA yet~

I am pretty sure your Tiguan has 2.0T TSI engine, it is alot quieter than FSI engine, if you can find an 06 or 07 Audi A3 or A4 2.0T FSI engine, and compare the noise, you will find how quiet your TSI engine is~

I have also noticed significant engine noise, but this is my first Turbo.

There is however an annoying vibration/rattle sound when the engine is at 2500 rpm under load (not in neutral)  Sounds like a heat shield or something is vibrating.

I am planning to take it in to get looked at as soon as possible.

Anyone else hear noises like that?

Unfortunately I checked may engine compartment and the damper has already been installed, rattle/vibration must be coming from somewhere else.  ???
